Where Your Money Goes: How Local Banking Strengthens Texas Communities

September 8, 2026

Many of our customers prefer to deal with local businesses whenever possible. They visit a neighbor’s retail store or restaurant because they know that spending their dollars locally creates jobs and a more prosperous community. Banking locally can have the same kind of impact, as your dollars are recirculated within the community through loans and mortgages that let people buy or refurbish a home, start or expand a business, or buy a vehicle.

An analysis of local banking in Texas, released this year by the Independent Bankers Association of Texas, revealed that lending by Texas community banks supported $112.4 billion in economic activity, created 1.6 million jobs and $76.4 billion in wages across Texas in 2024. The study noted that community bank deposits largely remain in Texas, creating a ripple effect that trengthens their communities. For every existing community bank job, there were 28 additional jobs supported by local bank lending.

How Local Deposits Help Texas Communities Grow

Why Bank local? When you place a deposit with a community bank, it’s like putting a little bit of your funds into the pockets of your friends and neighbors so they could buy a home or start a business. This way, a community bank benefits everyone throughout central and southeast Texas. As a bank and as individuals, we also support local charities and community projects that help make southeast Texas a better place to live.

Supporting Local Businesses

We know local and small businesses are the lifeblood of our community and vital to our economic success, and studies show that local banks invest a higher percentage of their deposits within their community compared to large, national banks.

That’s probably why the Federal Reserve’s 2026 Small Business Credit Survey revealed that small businesses that applied for loans, lines of credit, or cash advances with small banks were more likely to be approved than they were with other lenders, especially compared to large banks. Small banks and credit unions also ranked higher for customer satisfaction than large banks, finance companies, and online lenders.

The Advantages of Banking with a Local Community Bank

All of us live, work, and play in the southeast Texas area. We shop at the same stores, and our kids probably go to the same schools that yours do. That’s why we do all we can to help our local businesses and residents thrive and prosper.

Local Decision-Making

When you apply for a loan with us, the same people you meet with are the ones who can approve your loan. You’ll never have to wait for the approval of someone in another state or another part of the country. That allows for faster approvals, with the decision being made by those who understand our local economy, our business community, and the housing market.

Personalized Service

When you do your banking with a local bank, everyone you deal with, from our bank tellers to our CEO and president, believes in a personal approach when dealing with customers because if you do well, we all do well.

Community Involvement Beyond Banking

As a locally run, neighborhood bank, Moody Bank’s community involvement includes our annual contributions to The Salvation Army’s Thanksgiving appeal to provide meals to those in need. We also partner with the Galveston County Food Bank to collect food donations for the Share Your Holidays Food Drive; we participate in the United Way of Galveston’s Giving Campaign each year, as well as many other local nonprofit organizations.
